The primary function of this committee is the dissemination of information to our members and neighbors so that we all can make informed and intelligent decisions in balancing our love for our trees and Autumn colors against the need to make our homes and neighborhood as firewise as possible.

Creating Defensible Space

You may want to consult the Colorado State Forest Service or the Larkspur Fire Department to effectively create defensible space around your property. Forested property should have 3 zones of defensible space. Zone 1 reaches out 15 feet from your home and decks, where all flammable vegetation is removed. Zone 2 is an area of fuel reduction and extends 75-125 feet from the structure. All stressed, diseased, dead or dying trees are removed and remaining trees and shrubs in Zone 2 are thinned. Zone 3 is forested area extending past 125 feet on your property, which you can enjoy in its natural state.
